Jeffrey R. Martin is a civil trial lawyer. His practice is devoted to representing people who have been injured on account of the carelessness of others, including automobile accidents, premises defect, and medical malpractice matters. He also represents parties involved in commercial disputes and construction matters. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Attorney Martin regularly tries cases before juries, judges, and arbitrators throughout Connecticut and, as necessary, in Massachusetts.

      Attorney Martin's Approach

The goal of all litigation is to achieve a fair resolution for a client as quickly and efficiently as possible. Most claims can be resolved by settlement, but in order for a lawyer to achieve a settlement that is fair, it is necessary for the opposing party to understand that the alternative to a fair settlement proposal is a trial to conclusion. Attorney Martin's approach is to prepare every case as if it is going to be tried, and to try to verdict every case in which the opposing party does not make a fair settlement proposal. Attorney Martin believes that insurance companies and other sophisticated litigants have little incentive to make fair offers to the clients of lawyers who are not willing and prepared to try their cases if necessary.

Preparing a case for settlement or trial requires a close working relationship between the client and the lawyer based on familiarity and trust. Attorney Martin and his support staff work hard to get to know their clients and to be responsive to their need to be involved in the handling of their claims and the important decisions that need to be made along the way.

Motor Vehicle, Animal Bites and Defective Premises Cases

Attorney Martin has been representing people who have sustained genuine injuries as a result of motor vehicle accidents and dangerous and defective properties for the past 28 years, including jury trials throughout Connecticut.  Recent verdicts include:
      • $3,500,000 - Garbage truck helper struck by garbage truck (2005)
      • $1,700,000 - Motorist struck from behind by airport shuttle bus (2007)
      • $900,000 - Pedestrian struck and dragged beneath a runaway school bus (2003)
      • $73,000 - Child bitten in the face by a dog (2005)

Many other comparable matters have been settled without trial. The outcomes of trials are, of course, dependent on a variety of factors unique to each case and past case results cannot guarantee or predict the outcome of any future matter undertaken.

            Medical Malpractice

Attorney Martin also undertakes the representation of patients who have been seriously and irreparably injured by demonstrable violations of the standards of care by hospitals and physicians. Successful cases have included the following:
      • Representation of a kidney-stone patient who lost her vision due to a hospital and doctor's failure to monitor and treat low blood pressure.
      • Representation of a 35-year-old man whose physician failed to diagnose chest pains as an impending heart attack.
      • Representation of a 17-year-old girl whose doctors misread her x-ray, then lost it, and failed to diagnose an aggressive bone tumor in her pelvis.
      • Representation of a child who was administered chemotherapy drugs, instead of psychiatric medicine, while in a hospital.
      • Representation of the estate of a woman whose skin biopsy was misread as a benign skin defect, rather than the malignant melanoma that ultimately caused her death.

      Other Litigation

Attorney Martin also regularly represents parties involved in disputes involving commercial transactions, real estate use and ownership, and construction matters, including trials, arbitrations and mediations.
